The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has criticised the Trade Union Congress (TUC) over its rejection of the recently approved ₦70,000 monthly transport allowance for public workers.
Speaking in an interview with Channels Television on Wednesday, Ajaero said the TUC had never pushed for government intervention over the rising cost of living, unlike the NLC.
He explained that while the NLC was actively engaging the government for relief measures, the TUC stayed on the sidelines, which, according to him, makes it unfair for the TUC to now oppose an intervention it never fought for.
“You don’t kick against something you did not ask for or negotiate for. And you have asked for anything all these years, suddenly something was given to NLC and you now say you are kicking against it. TUC never asked for intervention as a result of rising cost of living,” he said.
He added: “Why is TUC challenging what was gotten for the workers when we stated clearly that NLC was acting alone?”
Recall that the TUC had earlier rejected the ₦70,000 transport allowance, demanding ₦300,000 instead.
The Tinubu administration approved the ₦70,000 monthly transport allowance for public workers amid a fuel price hike and ongoing calls for a review of the national minimum wage.
