Former Big Brother Naija housemate and medical doctor, Tjay, has warned Nigerians about the possible health risks of eating shawa fish, the popular dried fish used in many Nigerian meals.
In a video shared online, Tjay claimed the whitish substance often seen on the fish is mould. He also claimed the fish may contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), chemicals he described as cancer-linked, as well as heavy metals.
According to him, soaking the fish does not necessarily remove these substances.
“Guys, see this shawa, this dry fish is one of the most toxic fishes that we eat in the country,” he said.
Tjay advised consumers to soak the fish for at least one hour, then remove the head and skin before cooking. He claimed about 50 per cent of the toxins are concentrated in the head.
He also urged Nigerians to go for smaller-sized shawa fish, saying the tiny ones are less toxic.
“The tiny ones are less toxic,” he added.
