President Bola Tinubu says Nigerians should start seeing “measurable reductions” in transportation costs from October 1, 2026, as the government expands its National Affordable CNG Transit Programme nationwide.
An implementation committee under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, chaired by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, will oversee the rollout following Tinubu’s August 27 meeting with all 36 state governors. The administration is pointing to early wins: 100 CNG buses in Kaduna reportedly saved commuters over ₦3.5 billion in fares while moving 3.2 million passengers annually, Lagos-Ibadan fares dropped from about ₦8,000 to ₦3,200, Enugu-Nsukka fares fell from ₦2,500 to ₦1,500, and Abuja saw a 40% cut on select routes.
Petrol still sells for ₦1,400–₦1,450 per litre in major cities, and the report itself admits that cheaper fuel hasn’t always translated to cheaper fares because of gaps in CNG refuelling infrastructure.
Nigerians will believe the lower fares when they’re the ones paying them.
