Spain’s World Cup-winning coach, Luis de la Fuente, is set to sign a new contract that will keep him in charge of the national team until 2032.
The Spanish football federation (RFEF) confirmed the news on Monday.
“Luis de la Fuente will extend his contract through the next two European Championships, in 2028 and 2032, as well as the 2030 World Cup,” the RFEF said in a statement.
De la Fuente, 65, took over as Spain boss in 2022, replacing Luis Enrique, and has gone on to deliver World Cup glory, the Euro 2024 title, and the 2023 UEFA Nations League trophy during his time in charge.
Before stepping into the senior role, he spent 10 years working through Spain’s youth ranks.
Chair of the RFEF’s board of directors, Rafael Louzan, didn’t hold back on the praise.
“We’re talking about the most successful head coach in the history of the national team, and after 14 years with us, this is something Luis de la Fuente deserves, a long-term future at the RFEF,” Louzan said.
Spain are back in action on September 26 with a trip to England — their first game since winning the World Cup in July. Three days later, they host Croatia in Seville to kick off their Nations League campaign.
They’ll then face the Czech Republic in Oviedo on October 3, before rounding off the international break with another trip to Croatia three days after that.
With this kind of trophy haul, does De la Fuente deserve to be called Spain’s greatest ever coach? 👇
