The United States Government has congratulated Nigeria on its 66th Independence Anniversary, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between both countries.

In a statement issued by the Office of the Spokesman on Thursday, the US Department of State said it valued its relationship with Nigeria and appreciated the “substantive dialogue” both countries have had over the past year.

“On behalf of the United States of America, I extend my congratulations to the people of Nigeria on the 66th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence,” the statement said.

The department described Nigeria as Africa’s largest democracy and one of the continent’s biggest economies, noting the country’s important role in promoting regional stability and economic growth.

“The United States is proud to stand alongside Nigeria in pursuit of these common goals,” it added.

According to the statement, both countries share a commitment to progress on priorities including democratic principles, religious freedom, commercial relations, and peace and security.

“Our two nations are bound by a shared commitment to continued progress on our common priorities, rooted in mutual democratic principles, the protection of religious freedom, a growing commercial relationship, and a commitment to fostering peace and security,” the statement read.

The US Government also expressed hope for Nigeria’s continued peace, unity and prosperity.

“May this proud nation and its people thrive in peace, unity, prosperity, and hope for generations to come,” it said.
