Nigerian lawmakers will be spending a little more time in their constituencies — officially, at least, because the chambers aren’t ready for them yet.
The National Assembly has shifted its resumption of plenary from Tuesday, September 15 to Tuesday, September 29, 2026, according to an announcement by Kamoru Ogunlana, Clerk to the National Assembly, acting on the directive of Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
The reason given is straightforward: ongoing rehabilitation work in the Senate and House chambers needs more time to be completed before lawmakers can safely resume sittings. The clerk’s statement confirmed the new date directly, and the postponement was independently reported by multiple outlets.
The two-week extension means legislative business — including any pending bills and committee work — will now have to be rescheduled around the new date. For now, Nigerians will just have to wait a little longer to see what’s next on the Assembly’s agenda when it eventually reconvenes.
