Today, October 1, Nigeria marks 66 years of independence.
On this day in 1960, Nigeria officially broke free from British colonial rule, raising its own flag for the very first time and taking its place among the free nations of the world. What started as a dream for the founding fathers — Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo, Ahmadu Bello, Tafawa Balewa and others — has grown into Africa’s most populous nation and one of its biggest economic and cultural powerhouses.
Sixty-six years on, Nigeria remains a country of contrasts. We’ve given the world Afrobeats, Nollywood, world-class athletes, tech unicorns and some of the sharpest minds on the continent. From Burna Boy filling stadiums abroad to young Nigerians building fintech companies used across Africa, the spirit of “no matter what, we go make am” keeps showing up, generation after generation.
But independence day is also a time for honest reflection. Many of the challenges our founding fathers hoped to solve — economic hardship, insecurity, infrastructure gaps — are still very much part of daily life for millions of Nigerians. Yet through it all, the resilience, humour and hustle that define us as a people have never wavered.
As we mark another year of nationhood, one thing remains true: Nigeria’s greatest asset has always been its people.
