While some Nigerians can barely keep a New Year’s resolution for 11 days, a Kaduna cleric has kept a much bigger promise for 11 years running: showing up to celebrate Eid-el-Maulud with his Muslim neighbours, every single year, no excuses.
Pastor Yohanna Buru, General Overseer of Christ Evangelical and Life Intervention Ministry, led members of his church to mark the Maulud with Muslims across Kaduna and Northern Nigeria for the 11th consecutive year on Wednesday. He said the visit is his own quiet way of pushing religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence in a country that could use more of both.
Buru, who has previously earned United Nations World Interfaith Harmony Week recognition from King Abdullah II of Jordan, said he attends more than 30 Maulud celebrations annually across Nigeria and neighbouring countries. He described Prophet Muhammad (SAW) as “a messenger whose teachings on peace, love and compassion remain relevant to humanity,” and urged Nigerians to drop old religious and ethnic grudges.
Fellow cleric Rev. Rawland Sanda added that the goodwill runs both ways, with Muslim leaders also honouring invitations to Christian celebrations. Islamic scholars Imam Mohammed Musa and Imam Iliyasu Yusuf praised the initiative and called on the Federal Government to formally recognise Buru’s peace-building efforts.
