Every year, thousands of Nigerian business owners miss out on grants. Most don’t lose because their idea was weak. They lose because their paperwork wasn’t ready when the call opened.

Government grants are competitive and the schemes open and close, so no one can promise you one. What you can control is whether your business is ready. Here is how to get there.

Step 1: Register your business properly

Formal registration is a major requirement for businesses seeking access to government grants, loans, contracts, banking services and investment opportunities. Without a CAC certificate, most applications stop at the first screen.

There is good news if you are unregistered. The Federal Government is running a programme through the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) and the CAC to provide free business name registration for 250,000 micro, small and medium enterprises. Under the scheme, beneficiaries are also enrolled in SMEDAN’s support ecosystem, which includes training, grants and other government interventions. businessdaybusinessday

To apply, you visit smedan portal, create an account, and when asked whether you already have a CAC number, select “No”. Reports say the program runs on a first-come, first-served basis, so confirm slots are still open before you apply. Step 2: Get your records in order

Grant officers want proof that a real, working business exists. Prepare:

  • Your CAC certificate and business details
  • A valid NIN for the owner
  • A Tax ID (TIN) for your business
  • A bank account in the business’s name, kept separate from personal money
  • Simple records of sales and expenses for at least the past few months

Step 3: Stay compliant with the CAC

A registered business that has stopped filing can still be struck off. Right now the CAC is removing 100,000 companies for unfiled annual returns, so check your status before you apply for anything.

Step 4: Write a clear, specific proposal

Weak proposals say “we want to grow.” Strong ones answer four questions:

  1. What problem do you solve, and for whom?
  2. How much do you need, and exactly what will you spend it on?
  3. What will change as a result? Jobs created, customers served, revenue growth.
  4. Why are you credible? Your track record, registration and records.

Keep it short, factual and consistent with your documents.

Step 5: Watch only official channels

Look for open calls on the SMEDAN portal and the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment. Past schemes, such as the Presidential Conditional Grant Scheme, have deadlines, and the Minister has stated that the grant is completely free and no fees are required. nairametrics

Avoid grant scams

Fake portals are common. The government has previously warned about fraudulent sites that ask for account details to pay supposed grants. Remember: nairametrics

  • Genuine government grants do not charge processing fees.
  • Never share your BVN, ATM PIN or OTP.
  • Be suspicious of any “agent” who guarantees approval.
  • Check that the web address is an official government domain.
