You know things other people are struggling to learn. Maybe it’s how to cook, budget, edit videos, pass an exam, or grow an Instagram page.

That knowledge has value. Packaged well, an ebook or online course lets you create something once and sell it again and again, helping people while earning income beyond your working hours.

Here’s how to go from “I know this” to “I’ve launched this.”

1. Choose a Topic You Can Teach

You don’t need to be the world’s top expert. You need to be a few steps ahead of your audience. Look for the overlap between three things:

  • What you know well or have personally achieved
  • What you enjoy explaining
  • What people are willing to pay to learn

If you’re not sure about the third one, notice what people repeatedly ask you for help with.

2. Validate Before You Build

The biggest mistake is spending three months creating something nobody wants. Test demand first:

  • Ask your audience or community what they struggle with most
  • Search Facebook groups, Reddit, and Google for repeated questions
  • Run a quick poll or a short survey
  • Offer a pre-sale or waitlist to see who’ll commit

If a few people are willing to pay before the product exists, that’s a strong sign.

3. Choose the Right Format

An ebook is best for focused, practical topics: a guide, a checklist system, or a set of templates. It’s faster to create and cheaper to sell.

An online course suits topics that need demonstration, step-by-step teaching, or transformation over time. It takes more effort, but it can be priced higher.

If you’re a beginner, start with an ebook or a mini-course. You can always expand later.

4. Define a Clear Result

People don’t buy information, they buy outcomes. Complete this sentence:

“After this, my customer will be able to ______ in ______ time.”

For example: “Create a simple budget and save your first $500 in 60 days.” A specific promise is far more compelling than “Learn about personal finance.”

5. Outline Your Content

Work backward from the result. List the steps someone must take to get there, then turn each step into a chapter or lesson. A solid structure looks like this:

  1. Introduction: the problem and the promise
  2. Core lessons: three to seven clear steps
  3. Action items: an exercise or worksheet for each step
  4. Conclusion: next steps and encouragement

Keep it simple. Cut anything that doesn’t help the reader reach the result.

6. Create It Without Expensive Tools

You can build a quality product with free or low-cost tools:

  • Ebooks: Google Docs or Canva, exported as a PDF
  • Video lessons: your phone camera and a quiet space, or screen recordings
  • Worksheets and templates: Canva, Google Sheets, or Notion

Good content beats fancy production. Clear audio and clear teaching matter most.

7. Pick a Platform and Set a Fair Price

For selling, options include Gumroad, Selar, Paystack-powered storefronts, Teachable, Podia, or your own website. Choose one that supports the payment methods your customers use.

For pricing, consider the value of the result, not the hours you spent. A low-priced ebook can start small, while a course that delivers a major transformation can be priced higher. Offering a launch discount is a good way to get your first buyers and reviews.

8. Launch and Promote

Nobody finds a product by accident. Plan your launch:

  • Tell your email list and social media followers what’s coming
  • Share useful free content that previews your teaching
  • Collect testimonials from early buyers
  • Answer questions openly and often

Promotion isn’t pushy when your product truly helps. It’s service.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Trying to cover everything. A focused product sells better than a bloated one.
  • Waiting for perfection. Launch a solid version, then improve it with feedback.
  • Skipping the audience. Even a small, engaged audience beats a big silent one.
  • Underpricing out of fear. Low prices can signal low value.

Final Thoughts

You already have knowledge that could change someone’s life, or at least their week. Turning it into a product is a process of choosing a clear result, organizing what you know, and sharing it with people who need it.

Your first step today: write down one problem you can help solve, and send a message to three people who have that problem. Their answers will tell you what to create.
