First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is asking Nigerians to be more mindful of the food they throw away.
She made the appeal in a message marking the 2026 World Cleanup Day, marked on Sunday with the theme “From Clean Plates to Clean Cities.”
According to her, food waste deserves serious attention right now because climate change, conflict and other global problems are already making it harder to grow food and move it to where people need it.
“This year’s focus on food waste is particularly important at a time when climate change, conflicts, and other global challenges continue to disrupt food production and supply,” she said.
The First Lady called on Nigerians to think twice about how they buy, cook, eat and store food — small habits that add up at the end of the month.
“I encourage households, businesses, and communities to reduce food waste, dispose of refuse properly, and adopt more sustainable practices that protect our environment,” she added.
She added that cleaner communities will not happen by accident. It will take everybody playing their part.
“Through our collective efforts, we can build cleaner, healthier communities for present and future generations,” she said.
