If you own a registered company in Nigeria, check this today.
The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has started the sixth batch of its deregistration exercise, which puts 100,000 companies at risk of being removed from the register for not meeting their filing obligations. The public notice is dated 15 July 2026. Counting 90 days from that date, the window closes on or around 13 October 2026, so affected companies have only days left. tribuneonlinengtribuneonlineng
What the CAC is asking for
Affected companies must file all outstanding annual returns and provide information on Persons with Significant Control (PSC), also known as beneficial ownership, within 90 days of the notice. The CAC has warned that companies that do not comply in time will be struck off the register without further notice. tribuneonlinengsaharareporters
The consequences are serious. A struck-off company loses its legal status and cannot carry on business unless it is restored through the proper legal process. In practice, that can affect your bank accounts, contracts, tenders and your ability to trade under the company name. asabametro
How to check your company in five minutes
- Visit cac.gov.ng and open the public notice for the strike-off exercise.
- Open the published list of affected companies.
- Search for your exact company name and RC number.
- Repeat the search for every company you own or have been a director of, including old or dormant ones.
- Check spelling variations, such as “Ltd” and “Limited”.
If your name appears, act immediately. If it does not, you are not off the hook. Any company with unfiled returns can be targeted in a later batch.
What you need to file
Annual returns. Every registered company must file annual returns with the CAC under CAMA 2020. If you have skipped several years, you will need to file for each missing year, not just the latest one.
Beneficial ownership (PSC) information. This identifies the individuals who ultimately own or control the company, even where their names are not on the share register. Decide who qualifies before you file, because errors here cause delays.
One common mix-up. CAC annual returns are not tax returns. Filing with the CAC does not replace your obligations to the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), and the reverse is also true. Most companies need both.
Documents to gather before you start
- Certificate of incorporation and RC number
- Current details of directors and shareholders
- Registered office address
- Financial information for the years you are filing, where required
- Identity details for the persons with significant control
- Access to your CAC portal account
If you have lost the portal login or the company’s records, say so early. Recovering access can take time you do not have.
Is your company at risk? Warning signs
- You have not filed annual returns since you registered.
- You do not know who handled your CAC filings after incorporation.
- The agent who registered your company is no longer reachable.
- You changed your address, directors or shareholders without telling the CAC.
- You registered a company “just in case” and never used it.
If any of these apply, check your status now.
Do not wait for the last day
Filing late is stressful, and fixing a struck-off company later is slower and more costly than filing on time. File early, keep every receipt and confirmation, and send the evidence of compliance as the CAC directs.
