Human rights lawyer and political commentator Deji Adeyanju has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately comply with the Supreme Court’s recent judgment on the Electoral Act.
In a statement issued on Monday, Adeyanju urged the commission to remove from its official portal the names of candidates of the political parties affected by the judgment.
He said INEC is constitutionally required to enforce the Supreme Court’s decision under Section 287(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which says all authorities and persons must give effect to the court’s decisions.
According to him, INEC should take immediate steps to carry out the court’s orders in full, and compliance should not be selective or delayed.
“The names of all candidates affected by the judgment should be removed from INEC’s official portal as part of the steps required to give effect to the Supreme Court’s decision,” he said.
Adeyanju also asked the commission to take all the necessary administrative steps to achieve full compliance. He stressed that the Supreme Court’s judgments must be strictly enforced, and urged INEC to act without further delay so that its official records reflect the effect of the ruling.
His call comes amid ongoing debate over how the Electoral Act should be interpreted and applied after the Supreme Court’s decision.
It will be recalled that a seven-member Supreme Court panel recently allowed INEC’s appeal unanimously and restored Sections 77(5), 77(7) and 84(2) of the Electoral Act 2026, which the Court of Appeal had earlier struck down.
